Embrace the Magic of Autumn with these 5 Practices

Embracing Autumn

As the energy of Autumn sweeps in every year, it invites us to honour the natural cycles of life. The long sunny days of Summer slowly start to give way to shorter days and cooler nights. The colours of nature transform from vibrant greens to warm hues of red, orange, and yellow. And even though Heart Resonance are located on the Gold Coast, where we do not see deciduous changes, Autumn still carries a nostalgic and cozy feeling. It's a time of gratitude, reflection, and preparation.

On an energetic level, Autumn represents a shedding process. Just as the trees release their leaves, we are called to let go of what no longer serves us. This allows space for wisdom, growth, and rebirth to come in the cycles ahead. Autumn encourages us to turn inward and focus our energy on manifestation. It is the perfect time to envision our goals and clarify our dreams.

Consider the energy of Summer; lively, vibrant, and bursting with the heat of the sun. The long days allow us to be active and social, like bees buzzing from flower to flower. In contrast, as Autumn arrives, we begin to move into a cooler, calmer state. The energy becomes more inward, introspective, and reflective. Autumn invites us to slow down, turn inward, and prepare for the symbolic hibernation of Winter. This transition from the fiery energy of Summer into the earthy, grounded energy of Autumn is an important time of balance. Honouring the changing of the seasons reminds us to care for our bodies, minds, and spirits. We need both the vibrant, busy days and the quiet, reflective days. Practicing mindfulness during Autumn allows us to gracefully move with the cycles of nature.

So how do we embrace the magic of the Autumn season? Below are 5 beautiful practises that you can incorporate into the beginning of the season, to help to honour and recognise this change, and to celebrate the cyclical nature of our existence.

Create an Altar for Autumn

Taking a moment at the beginning of the season to create an Autumn altar is a beautiful way to embrace its energy. You might like to go for a walk and collect symbolic items like pinecones, acorns and leaves. Come home and place these in your sacred location of choice. Add some autumn fruits such as apples, pumpkins, or even include dried flowers and cinnamon sticks - add anything that reminds you of the essence of Autumn and of letting go. Diffuse essential oils like cinnamon and clove before spending time sitting with your altar in quiet meditation. You can come back to your altar for reflecting and intention setting, or even use the space as host for some of the rituals below.

Autumn Tea Ceremony

Enjoy a moment of stillness and reflection over a warming, earthy tea blend - the perfect autumn experience. You may like to start by gathering all the required equipment and taking it to your altar for the ceremony. Slowly prepare a tea using herbal teas, incorporating cinnamon, cardamom, clove, nutmeg, and ginger to symbolise Autumn's spices. Allow the tea to steep, and whilst doing so you can visualise your intentions also infusing into your pot. Drink mindfully and savour every moment.

Autumn Equinox Moon Ritual

The Autumn Equinox lands on the 20th March in Australia. The Autumn Equinox represents a time of balance, reflection, and preparation as the cooler season approaches. It is a time when the light and dark of each day are equal in length. There is a symbolic dying back and letting go occurring in nature. It is the perfect time to cleanse, release old habits or limiting beliefs, and embrace the introspective energy of the season. On the night of the Equinox, hold a ceremony honouring the balance of light and dark. Light a yellow candle representing the sun and balance a black stone representing letting go and a white one representing new beginnings on each side. Meditate in this space, honouring Autumn's wisdom and align yourself with the natural cycles and rhythms of the year. You might even like to make a list of habits, mindsets, or beliefs you want to release. Gather some dried leaves and shred your list over a bowl. Burn the shredded pieces (safely!) while stating your intentions to let go of what no longer serves you. Scatter the ashes outside and feel a sense of surrender and release.

Autumn Journaling Practice

The beginning of Autumn is a perfect time to explore some journaling prompts on gratitude, reflection, and renewal. Find a quiet space and dedicate some time to a journaling practice honouring the Autumn season. Here are some prompts to guide your reflection:

  • Write about what you love and appreciate about Autumn. Describe your favourite sights, sounds, smells, and feelings this season evokes.

  • Make a gratitude list of all the blessings in your life right now, from simple joys to major accomplishments.

  • Reflect on the past year since last Autumn. What lessons, growth, or transformations have you experienced? How have you evolved as a person?

  • Consider areas of your life that feel in need of renewal or letting go. What changes do you want to make as you prepare for the season ahead? What emotions can you let go of, just like the Autumn leaves?

  • Visualise the coming year ahead. What dreams or intentions do you want to nurture? What seeds are you planting for the future?

  • Write a letter to your future self next Autumn. Share any wisdom or advice that would serve you well in the months ahead.

When finished, read over your journaling. Highlight any themes, insights, or actions to take throughout the season. Notice how giving yourself reflective time during Autumn can reveal abundant wisdom.

Autumn Grounding Exercises

The Autumn season is connected to the element of earth, and so as we enter into this season, it is a nice time to incorporate grounding activities like yoga, meditation, time in nature, and soothing essential oils. These activities can help to stay centred amidst Autumn's stirring winds of change. A particularly powerful grounding exercise is a walking meditation. Make time for a meditative walk in nature to fully immerse in the sights, smells, and energies of the changing season, walking slowly as you open your senses to the beauty around you. Throughout your walk, continue taking mindful breaths. Feel your feet connecting with the steady earth. If you feel called to pause and sit, you can take in the beauty around you, inviting tranquility and balance. Reflect on any insights or inspiration that surfaced during your walk, and carry this grounded, present energy through this season of transition.

Autumn brings a profound opportunity for inner work. By tuning into the unique energy of the season, we can graciously honour life's cycles of death and rebirth. May you have a blessed Autumn season!
